Missouri Hospital Deploys Palm Vein Authentication Technology For Time/Attendance System

Fujitsu Frontech North America Inc. recently announced that Bates County Memorial Hospital in Butler, Mo. is using the Fujitsu PalmSecure palm vein authentication solution for its time and attendance system.

PalmSecure will replace Bates County Memorial’s existing fingerprint-based biometric time and attendance system as a more reliable, hygienic, secure authentication solution that is easily integrated into the existing system.

“When we were looking for a new biometric solution, we wanted a system that would decrease the number of false negatives, hygienically comply with hospital infection control standards, operate easily within our existing IT infrastructure and cumulatively provide a high level of credibility to our time and attendance system,” said Daniel Cook, networking engineer at Bates County Memorial Hospital. “We immediately noticed a reduction in the number of false negatives that were common in our previous fingerprint-based system. PalmSecure has also saved the hospital money by eliminating a two-factor authentication process that was easily circumvented, and replacing it with a single, reliable palm scan authentication.”

PalmSecure was integrated into Bates County Memorial’s new MedGenix Health Information Network, Hospital Information System modules and modules for Rural Hospitals and Clinics developed by Creative Healthcare Systems, Inc. (CHS). PalmSecure was selected to provide a secure identification system to address the security and privacy concerns associated with accessing employee records and time and attendance. Bates County Memorial and CHS leveraged the Fujitsu PalmSecure Web-based system to integrate PalmSecure’s robust capabilities into the MedGenix network in less than four weeks. Infection control has also been improved as PalmSecure does not require physical contact like fingerprint-based biometrics or leave any residual trace elements.

“PalmSecure provides Bates County Memorial Hospital with a cutting-edge biometric solution for tracking employee access. This application demonstrates PalmSecure’s rapid adoption to include time and attendance systems commonly found throughout today’s healthcare and high tech industries,” said Jim Preasmyer, director of sales and business development with the new products group, Fujitsu Frontech North America. “Bates County Memorial was able to easily integrate PalmSecure, reducing false negatives and improving the hospital profitability with a more efficient time and attendance system.”

The Fujitsu PalmSecure palm vein authentication solution uses palm vein pattern recognition technology for accurate identity management authentication. It is a contactless, logical access authentication device that offers an easy-to-use, hygienic enterprise biometric solution for verifying identity.

The PalmSecure product uses a near infrared light to capture a person’s palm vein pattern, generating a unique biometric template that is matched against pre-registered users’ palm vein patterns. This advanced, vascular palm vein authentication technology provides a highly reliable biometric logon solution with extremely low false acceptance ratios.

“Bates County Memorial selected MedGenix knowing that the system would be open architecture, easy to use, scalable and supported by our commitment to customer-driven service,” said Mitch Goff, chief technology officer at CHS. “Fujitsu quickly proved that PalmSecure would be an excellent addition to the hospital as a reliable and secure solution that is interoperable with our existing browser based systems.”
