Preparing for the Anniversary

We’re a society that celebrates birthdays, holidays and anniversaries. These are events to be proud of and celebrated, but perhaps none more so than the 10th anniversary of the cowardly attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

This anniversary should serve as a reminder to the world of terrorists, that we as Americans, are everything that they are not, and never will be. We are free to choose as we wish. We are an enduring people who have risen from the ashes of terrorism and have sought to bring freedom to others around the world.

Millions of Americans will stand firm on Sunday, Sept. 11, and loudly proclaim that we are the victors of an unbalanced, short-sided regime that would overthrow the world in an unjust cause.

That regime would represent all that is wrong with the world, and the post-Osama bin Laden fantasy camp.

Thousands of people are expected to visit the World Trade Center site on Sept. 11, and standing with them will be millions of Americans, who suffered silently during the devastation, nearly 10 years ago.

A new World Trade Center stands tall on New York’s Lower Manhattan skyline. Rightfully concerned, police and law enforcement have grappled with how best to monitor the steady flow of tourists, workers and commerce. They have combined architectural innovation, hi-tech gadgets and manpower to make the site very secure.

Also at work, a computer system used video analytic to detect potential threats, like unattended bags, and retrieve stored images based on descriptions of terror or other criminal suspects.

I applaud the New York Police Department, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey police and private security firms for their relentless and valiant work to protect and preserve that hallowed ground in Lower Manhattan.
