2 San Diego Police Officers Shot in Traffic Stop

Two San Diego police officers were shot, one fatally, during a traffic stop late Thursday night, according to Police Chief Shelly Zimmerman.

One of the officers suffered multiple gunshot wounds to the chest and died at the hospital, the other is expected to survive this morning after a surgery that lasted hours. The names and tenure of the officers has not been released, as police are in the midst of contacting extended families about the event. Zimmerman did note that both officers were a part of the gang suppression unit.

According the police, there is one suspect in custody. He had been shot and was being treated at the hospital.

The two officers had pulled over a vehicle at about 11 p.m. Thursday night. Immediately after, they called for emergency cover, Zimmerman said. Other officers were in the area and arrived on the scene shortly after. They found both officers suffering from gunshot wounds to the upper torso.

After the shooting, police swarmed the area and searched for any possible additional suspects with the aid of officers in a helicopter, focusing on an area just south of Acacia Grove, where the incident had taken place.

The incident comes just weeks after five police officers were killed in a sniper attack in Dallas, and another 3 were killed in Baton Rouge during a carefully planned “assassination.”

Compared to around the same time in 2015, the number of police shooting deaths on the job is up 78 percent.
