PlayStation Beefs up Security with 2-Step Verification

PlayStation owners can now enable two-factor authentication on their PlayStation Network accounts. The addition to security comes as a much-needed layer of protection as the service has been plagued with severe security breaches in recent years.

Sony confirmed that users would be able to activate the two-step verification on their accounts in a tweet that linked to a page that explains how the process works.

The page explains that users who use the same password for multiple accounts are vulnerable to a cyber breach. Now, when signing into an account on the PlayStation network, the user will type their password along with a verification code that will be received on their mobile device.

“By requiring two forms of identification for sign-in, your account and personal information will be better protected,” the PlayStation page reads.

It was full five years ago that Sony suffered a devastating hack that compromised the personal details of 77 million PSN users. While two-factor log-in isn’t the bulletproof against hacking, it does offer some peace of mind and a second layer of much needed protection.
