Student Shot on First Day at Maryland High School

The first day of school took an unexpected turn for many early Monday morning in Maryland, as a 15-year-old student at Perry Hall High School opened fire in the school cafeteria, wounding a classmate in the process.

The shooter was apprehended by teachers before being taken into custody by local authorities. As of Monday evening, the 17-year-old victim remained in critical condition at Maryland Shock Trauma Center, according to a hospital spokesperson.

Baltimore County Police Chief James Johnson said he did not believe the shooter was specifically targeting the victim. The police also said it was unclear at this point whether the assailant will be charged as an adult. Several students described the weapon as a shotgun.

A middle-class community located along the Interstate 95 corridor, Perry Hall is the largest school in Baltimore County, with 2,200 students.

This alarming event brings with it several questions. Are there no safe havens anymore? Whether it is a movie theater or a school, it seems we have to have our guard up no matter where we are.

And should schools take more precautions to prevent this? Should more schools have metal detectors? Should they be required? If it wasn’t for a few quick thinking teachers, the damage done could be far worse. So what can be done, if anything, to prevent these events from happening?
