BART Police to Wear Cameras While on Duty

Once the policy is finalized, each BART patrol officer will have a camera assigned to them to wear while on duty. The cameras will not always be running, but officers must turn them on once they begin to engage a person. This will allow officers to have their actions recorded, thus having evidence in case any apprehensions end up in court.

The BART police department will be using 3-ounce cameras with the AXON flex video system. The department will be one of the first to use these cameras. Police departments already using the cameras are Chula Vista, CA, Atlanta, GA., and Chesapeake, VA.

Officers having cameras recording their actions while on duty could be a good thing. The cameras may lead to the officers being on their best behaviors because they will essentially be recording hard evidence against themselves if they commit any wrongdoings while on the job.

Do you think officers having cameras on duty is a good thing? Or do you think this could be a step in the wrong direction? The cameras could help in protecting both the cops and the general public, but some may feel the cameras are a violation of privacy. How do you feel? Should more police departments adopt this policy or should officers not be using these cameras at all?
