Shoe Bomb Threat Strikes Again

shoebombannerAccording to articles from Fox News, NY Daily News and CNN, the Department of Homeland Security has warned that an attack on passenger jets with the use of shoe bombs is a present threat. The DHS issued the warning on Wednesday and stated that the threat applies to flights traveling from other countries into the US, not domestic flights within the US.

Though the DHS has warned about the threat, “officials stressed there is no specific threat or known plot,” according to CNN. The agency has simply warned airlines to pay special attention to travelers’ shoes and to be on the lookout for possible explosive devices hidden in them. One of CNN’s sources said the threat may extend to liquids and cosmetics as well.

The threat of a bomb inside a shoe is not a first—in 2001, Richard Reid attempted to blow up a flight from Miami to Paris using a shoe bomb, though he was apprehended by suspicious passengers. He is currently serving a life sentence in prison.

Fox News and NY Daily News report that this threat is unrelated to Sochi, which received warnings about possible terror threats on passenger flights earlier this month.
