Security Guard Shoots Man Celebrating Pregnancy of His First Child

Do you remember the moment when you first found out that you or your significant other was pregnant?! What a moment filled with mixed emotions, smiles, laughter, maybe even tears of joy and celebratory events like get-togethers with family and friends, baby showers and guns. Wait?! What does a gun have to do with celebrating a baby?

At Sunset Ridge Apartments in Westminster, Colorado, according to family members, soon-to-be-dad, 24-year-old Security Guard Shoots Man Celebrating Pregnancy of His First ChildDavid Ludewig, along with his airsoft gun, was out celebrating at approximately 1:25am that he and his wife were pregnant with their first child when tragedy struck. Ludewig was fatally shot.

Witnesses have told various news outlets that they saw a security guard retreating and attempting to get behind cover, recognizing that Ludewig had a weapon. Allegedly, Ludewig had his airsoft gun raised, pointing directly at the security guard. In that split second of a moment, the security guard made the decision to fire his gun, taking the life of the soon-to-be-born baby’s dad.

Now, if the story ended right there, I’m sure there would be some law suits, maybe even some retaliation, but here’s the rest of the story.

The security guard had approached Ludewig after seeing him urinate near a dumpster on the property.

“My cousin made a very, very…a very bad mistake and got an airsoft gun and pushed back, in order to make him (the security guard) leave us alone,” said Johnny Secrest, Ludewig’s cousin.

The "unknowns:"

  1. The name of the security guard;
  2. The company in which the security guard works for;
  3. If the security guard will face charges.

The "knowns:"

  1. Ludewig’s death is being investigated as a homicide;
  2. Secrest told media that the apartment complex managers told the family they would be evicted in 3 days; and
  3. A celebration of Ludewig’s life and benefit for his unborn child will be held on September 25 at Herman’s Hideaway in Denver from 7pm until midnight.

So, readers, what do you think about the security guard's usage of his gun? Was he in the right? Should the security guard have fatally shot Ludewig or just shot Ludewig in the arm or leg to protect himself?

Should security guards even be allowed to carry guns? And, is it just me, but why was Ludewig celebrating at 1:25am? Shouldn't he be home with his pregnant wife?

Sadly, what about the unborn baby? As a mother, what would you tell your child when he or she is old enough to ask about his or her dad?
