The Debate: Hidden, Loaded Guns on Educational Campuses

The Debate: Hidden, Loaded Guns on Educational Campuses

It was the shopping of the fun stuff that I enjoyed most before starting to college, finding the most awesome bedding with big, frilly throw pillows for my dorm room; stocking up on supplies, like the perfect notebooks in the perfect colors and pens that flowed effortlessly across the page as professors lectured and I absorbed knowledge; and the backpack, the one with zippers and secret compartments hidden within. Not once though, did the thought of having a weapon for protection cross my mind.

Currently in Florida, however, there are five bills that if passed would force public colleges and universities as well as K-12 schools to allow hidden, loaded guns on campus. And, here the debate begins: Gun lobbyists are using the tragic shooting that occurred last year at Florida State University (FSU) to support their opinion that guns are needed on college campuses. In opposition is FSU President John Thrasher, who believes that allowing guns on campus would make it harder for law enforcement to determine the “good” students with guns versus the “bad” students with guns.

With all things, I believe there is a time and place, and I personally do not think loaded guns that are hidden have any place on an educational campus. College campuses have other risk factors such as drugs, alcohol and academic pressures to deal with, and adding guns to the mix seems dangerous and irresponsible.

What do you think readers?

Should students be allowed to have hidden, loaded guns on college campuses?

What about allowing hidden, loaded guns on K-12 campuses?

As always, I look forward to your reactions, opinion and thoughts.
