This interactive panel discussion provides real-world examples of the challenges in keeping our educational institutions safe. Best practices and opportunities to strengthen school safety will be shared by panel members, consisting of practitioners involved in school-based law enforcement, emergency management, and school administration. Audience participation is highly encouraged in this informal, informative session. Learn key features of emergency preparedness, not only from the direct experience of panelists, but also from other participants with experiences to share with regard to mitigation, protection, response, and recovery involving school-centric hazards.

Upon completion of this session, the participant will be able to demonstrate a working knowledge of the challenges to keeping educational institutions safe and will be familiar with promising and proven practices in strengthening school safety and security Participants will have basic knowledge of measures needed to develop a campus culture of preparedness, as viewed by current school-based emergency management practitioners.

The participant will be able to:

  1. Identify challenges to establishing, strengthening, and maintaining safe and secure educational institutions
  2. Develop practical supporting tools to establish a culture of school preparedness and resilience
  3. Identify proven and promising practices in promoting school safety and security
  4.  Apply lessons learned from school emergency management practitioners to strengthen emergency preparedness
