The Loss Prevention Impact of Emerging Point-of-Sale Technology

The retail landscape especially with regard to emerging point of sale technologies is in an era of extremely rapid change and advance. Increased automation of service channels has many potential benefits for the retailer including customer convenience and resultant satisfaction, decreased labor costs, and opportunities for innovative merchandising. Omni-channel retail characteristics are poorly understood as the technology and use by customers is still in the nascent developmental phase. Thus, it is even harder to foresee the impact on loss prevention.

However, before undertaking widespread implementation of technology-enabled checkout systems and re-engineering checkout processes, companies would be prudent to identify potential loss prevention risks and develop efficacious strategies to mitigate identified risks.

This presentation will provide an overview of the various emerging mobile POS scenarios and the associated loss prevention challenges.
