Chief Robert Warfel, Director of Public Safety/Chief of Police

Chief Warfel has been at Xavier since March 2019. Prior to serving as Xavier's Director of Public Safety/Chief of Police, he was an agent with the FBI for 22 years developing experience in case management, program management and security operations including national and regional programs of diverse FBI security initiatives in both international and domestic environments. Chief Warfel's experience and specialized knowledge developed expertise in Crisis Management, Media and Public Relations, Critical Incident Response, Continuity of Operations Planning, and large scale special event security operations, including team and human resource management. Chief Warfel received his BA from Butler University and his JD from Ohio Northern College of Law and practiced law in Ohio before entering the FBI in 1997.
Dr. Cheryl Jonson, Associate Professor
Xavier University, Cincinnati, OH
Cheryl Lero Jonson is an Associate Professor in the Department of Criminal Justice at Xavier University. Her current research interests focus on the impact of prison on recidivism, the use of meta-analysis to organize criminological knowledge, public opinion surrounding gun control and mass shootings, and civilian responses to active shooters. She has published over 35 articles and chapters as well as Correctional Theory: Context and Consequences, The American Prison: Imagining a Different Future, and The Origins of American Criminology. In addition, she has trained over 2,500 people in active shooter responses in school and workplace settings.
