School and Police Response to Active Assailant Events, Things to Consider

Developing a strong, professional relationship with all surrounding law enforcement is critical in preserving the security and safety of students on campus. Chief Ron Applin of Atlanta Public Schools presents the case for a new kind of school security. In 2016, APS launched its own police department designed in alignment with a national “triad” model where school resource officers counsel, police and teach. These officers represent a new kind of police – trained specifically for the school environment with skills in social emotional learning, positive behavior supports, restorative practices and crisis intervention for youth.
