Campus public safety directors are in a uniquely challenging position of protecting all members of the campus. While institutions of higher education have a responsibility to provide a safe and secure campus environment, they cannot eliminate random acts of violence. The very real possibility of an active shooter remains an ever-present danger and when they occur, they evolve quickly.
At least 66.9% of all active shooter incidents are over prior to the arrival of law enforcement. This creates the need for educators and students to be prepared to survive an active shooter situation. Schools need to use a system of education and working with law enforcement to train the campus community on how to survive an active shooter situation and minimize casualties.

Jeremy Jesenovec is a retired Police Lieutenant from an active inner-ring suburb of Cleveland Ohio, and is currently Chief of Public Safety for a local college. He also serves part-time as a police officer for two local police departments and serves on a police advisory council vital to the safety of one of the nation’s most highly visible tourist areas encompassing museums, the playhouse district, two large Hospital systems, and several colleges.
In addition to being an accomplished Law Enforcement leader, he is an experienced Security Manager, workplace Safety Specialist, Marine Corps veteran, and serves as a Civil Air Patrol Emergency Services specialist.
Jeremy is also a freelance public safety technical writer, having written dozens of white papers on security technology. He has contributed several articles for top law enforcement websites on topics of leadership and training.
Jeremy has worked in law enforcement and security roles for four college campuses. He has extensive active shooter response training, and is a certified active shooter response instructor.
