Vumii Wins Technology Innovation Award From Wall Street Journal

Vumii, a developer of long-range, day/night surveillance camera systems, announced recently that The Wall Street Journal has named its Discoverii camera system as the Technology Innovation Award winner in the physical security category. Judges looked for innovations that broke new ground in their fields and that demonstrated some measurable impact.

According to The Wall Street Journal, Vumii was selected in this category for developing a night-vision camera technology that uses a near-infrared laser to illuminate an area. Most long-distance night-vision cameras "see" in the dark by capturing thermal infrared rays.

But these cameras can't read writing or recognize faces, and they can't see through glass. Vumii's Discoverii technology gets its illumination from an invisible laser beam that produces a high-resolution image that can be captured by standard video equipment. Introduced in 2006, the equipment is being used to monitor a nuclear power plant in Japan and a water system in Pennsylvania, among other uses.

“We are honored to have our technology recognized by such an esteemed panel of judges,” said Vumii CEO Randall Foster. “Our Discoverii camera systems break new ground by giving security professionals the ability to identify targets, recognize facial features and read license plates and ship identification numbers at distances up to 3,000 meters, day or night, and this award is a tribute to our achievement with this technology.”
