Schneider Electric To Provide Wireless Video Surveillance System For Pennsylvania Town

The city of Wilkes-Barre, Pa., has awarded Schneider Electric a $2 million contract for a wireless video surveillance system. Schneider Electric will design, install and maintain a network of more than 200 digital surveillance cameras located throughout the city’s downtown area, commercial areas, school zones, parks and parking garages.

The city of Wilkes-Barre and Hawkeye Security Solutions, a nonprofit corporation established by the city specifically for the deployment and implementation of a citywide video security system, selected Schneider Electric based on the company’s experience and technical knowledge.

“Schneider Electric’s camera network will provide state-of-the-art technology for the city of Wilkes-Barre,” said Thomas M. Leighton, mayor of Wilkes-Barre. “Within approximately six months, many city parks will be monitored by cameras, every one of our police officers will be supported by the network, and every one of our residents will be better protected as a result of this initiative.”

Schneider Electric will install a video management system with scalability, so that additional cameras can be added at anytime. The cameras will utilize existing network infrastructure in order to be linked to the new central command center to be constructed, as part of this project, at the Wilkes-Barre Police Department Headquarters.

A private security company will monitor the cameras continuously in real time and the feed will be directly linked to the police department to provide officers with the ability to view the camera output at any time. The system will also have remote viewing capabilities and allow for mobile video transmission for use by police in the field.

"Schneider Electric is proud to partner with the city of Wilkes-Barre to create this advanced video surveillance system,” said Tony DeStefano, director of integrated security sales, Schneider Electric’s Systems Integration East. “Designed with the latest in wireless and video technologies, this ‘cutting edge’ system will be an important tool to support the police department’s efforts to keep Wilkes-Barre safe and make it an even more desirable area for families and businesses.”
