Virtela Expands Leadership Team, Opens New Office in Silicon Valley

Virtela, which provides managed network, security and cloud services, has appointed Mark Weiner as senior vice president of worldwide marketing. Weiner brings to Virtela more than two decades of senior management expertise in the data center and networking industries where he helped shape new markets and technologies while at Cisco Systems, NetScaler (acquired by Citrix) and Redback Networks.  Virtela also announced the opening of both a Silicon Valley office and a customer advisory board as part of its ongoing corporate expansion.

"I'm most excited about how Virtela is defining the next phase of the cloud with a clear vision about the evolution of advanced network and IT services moving to the cloud," Weiner said.  "Today's savvy CIOs are migrating data and IT resources to the cloud to reduce costs and offload day-to-day management.  Virtela is supporting this CIO-led initiative by providing enterprises with cloud-based, fully managed alternatives to technologies they traditionally had to deploy in-house, such as multi-layer security, virtual private networks and application acceleration, with much more to come."

In his new role, Weiner will be managing Virtela's global marketing strategy, product management and customer advisory board.  At Cisco, Weiner led marketing across multiple data center business units generating $1 billion of annual revenue, and successfully launched the company into the WAN optimization market and number one market share within two years. Previously, he was vice president of worldwide marketing at NetScaler and worked to develop the application delivery market, leading to the company's acquisition by Citrix Systems for $325 million. Earlier in his career, he spent several years in telecommunications, serving as vice president of worldwide marketing at Redback Networks and a core member of its IPO team, the fifth-largest offering in 1999.

"Having worked with Mark at NetScaler, I know that his strengths lie in understanding customer's needs and mapping them to the capabilities of new and advanced technologies, often leading to the creation or evolution of new markets like application delivery," said B.V. Jagadeesh, newly named CEO of Virtela. "He will help us expand our innovation in moving more network and IT services onto our cloud platform, and aligning that innovation with our customers' business goals to maximize the benefits the cloud can deliver to them."

In addition to expanding its management team, Virtela has opened a new office in Silicon Valley to enable the company to deepen its engagements with the many technology vendors and thought leaders located there.  Virtela headquarters remain in Denver, with network and security operations centers in Denver, Mumbai, India, and Manila, Philippines.
