American Science and Engineering Receives Order for Airport Cargo Screening Systems

American Science and Engineering, worldwide supplier of x-ray detection solutions, has received an $8.2 million order for Z Portal and Sentry Portal cargo and vehicle screening systems from a Latin American government agency to protect an international airport.

The Z Portal and Sentry Portal systems will be used to safely and effectively screen vehicles and air cargo for explosive threats, drugs, and other contraband at this Latin American airport. One Z Portal system will be used to scan trucks entering the airport for manifest verification.  The second Z Portal and Sentry Portal will be used in combination to scan pallets and containers or Unit Load Devices (ULDs) which are used to load luggage, freight, and mail onto aircraft.  The systems will leverage ASE Connect — AS&E’s networking solution for centralized management of X-ray equipment, images, and associated data.

The combination of Z Portal and Sentry Portal systems will provide a high-throughput, high-penetration, drive-through cargo inspection solution that delivers a reliable means of detecting threatening materials, weapons, and contraband hidden in ULD cargo containers, without impeding the flow of commerce. The systems are safe for drivers, operators and cargo, and offer the unique combination of high-throughput capability and unsurpassed image quality.

“This order marks our second Z Portal system deployment and first Sentry Portal order in this Latin America country,” said Anthony Fabiano, AS&E’s President and CEO. “The systems will be custom engineered to meet our client’s unique air cargo scanning requirements, taking advantage of both high quality transmission X-rays in the Sentry Portal system and proven Z Backscatter™ X-ray imaging in the Z Portal system.”
