McCarran International Airport Expands its Pelco Security System in New Terminal

Schneider Electric recently announced the successful expansion of its Pelco by Schneider Electric Endura IP video management system (VMS) in the newly opened Terminal 3 at McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas.

The airport, which ranked 20th-busiest in the world in 2011, added more than 900 Pelco cameras and integrated the video system with an access control system to provide mission-critical surveillance for public and back-of-house areas, security checkpoints, U.S. Customs and Border Protection sections, baggage systems, the tram system, and parking facilities. This expanded system integrates with an existing Endura solution already deployed in McCarran, allowing security personnel to effectively safeguard people and property throughout the entire airport.

The intelligent, yet easy-to-use Endura VMS was originally chosen by the security team at McCarran International Airport in 2006 for its reliability, enhanced operational flexibility, centralized management, cost-effective recording, integration and future growth capabilities.

“Schneider Electric’s Pelco security systems have played a crucial role in protecting McCarran Airport and its patrons for more than a decade,” said David Bourgon, manager of IT services, McCarran International Airport. “With more than 41 million people visiting McCarran in 2011, the Endura solution provides us with the scalability that our airport requires as well as the tools to effectively monitor and quickly respond to events.”

According to airport officials, the system, which includes cameras in seven buildings, can also be accessed by various local law enforcement agencies and security groups. With the extension, the security team at McCarran also implemented the Endura mapping application, which makes use of existing geographical information system maps, to provide easy reference points for the cameras. The mapping gives operators the ability to pull up a map of an area at the airport and visibly see all of the cameras in that area. Users can then click on specific cameras in that area to view the video.

“We are excited to continue our partnership with McCarran International Airport and support them in the expansion of the security system in Terminal 3,” said Sam Belbina, vice president of Pelco video security, Schneider Electric. “McCarran has long been on the cutting edge of airport technology. The Endura VMS is the ideal solution for this airport, providing mission-critical surveillance operations, around-the-clock monitoring and unwavering reliability.”

With a long and prestigious history of offering high-quality, innovative products and exceptional customer service, Schneider Electric, with its Pelco video portfolio, has become one of the most sought-after video security solutions for airports around the world. The Pelco airport solutions not only improve airport security, but also increase operational efficiencies, enhance perimeter protection, more readily allocate resources and respond to any number of situations that may arise.

  • The Evolution of IP Camera Intelligence

As the 30th anniversary of the IP camera approaches in 2026, it is worth reflecting on how far we have come. The first network camera, launched in 1996, delivered one frame every 17 seconds—not impressive by today’s standards, but groundbreaking at the time. It did something that no analog system could: transmit video over a standard IP network. Read Now

  • From Surveillance to Intelligence

Years ago, it would have been significantly more expensive to run an analytic like that — requiring a custom-built solution with burdensome infrastructure demands — but modern edge devices have made it accessible to everyone. It also saves time, which is a critical factor if a missing child is involved. Video compression technology has played a critical role as well. Over the years, significant advancements have been made in video coding standards — including H.263, MPEG formats, and H.264—alongside compression optimization technologies developed by IP video manufacturers to improve efficiency without sacrificing quality. The open-source AV1 codec developed by the Alliance for Open Media—a consortium including Google, Netflix, Microsoft, Amazon and others — is already the preferred decoder for cloud-based applications, and is quickly becoming the standard for video compression of all types.
