Federal Authorities Issue Fourth of July Terror Warning

With the 4th of July weekend approaching, the Department of Homeland Security and the FBI warned local law enforcement officials around the country about their heightened concern of possible terror attacks targeting this day. It is common practice for bulletins to be released as a reminder that terrorists may use holidays as timing to generate even more attention.

The bulletin noted that while there is no specific or credible threat, there are ongoing threats posed by the Islamic State and other local extremists. Just this month, federal investigators disrupted a plot to assault Boston police officers, shooting Usaamah Rahim who planned to attack police with military-style knives.

Here are some tips to help you, your family and friends stay safe and alert while enjoying firework displays:

  • Keep your eyes open for suspicious-looking bags in random locations. IEDs could be inside.
  • Be on the lookout for someone recording/monitoring activities with a video camera, taking notes, drawing diagrams, noting on maps, using binoculars, etc. Notify police immediately.
  • If you notice a person or group of people who don’t seem to belong or are acting strangely, notify police.
  • Develop a plan of action should an act of terrorism take place. Determine a preplanned meeting spot for your group to meet.
  • Stay as calm as possible. The calmer you are, the clearer you are able to think and make rational, lifesaving decisions.
