New Orleans Plans to Boost Security on Bourbon Street

Officials in New Orleans are taking a second look at security on one of the most famous streets in the city following recent gun violence incidents that left one dead and nine more injured on Bourbon Street in late 2016.

A preliminary version of the security proposal calls for portions of the street to be closed off from vehicles during high foot traffic times, in an effort to protect tourists from vehicle attacks much like those in Nice and Berlin. Concrete barriers will most likely be used to keep vehicles from roaming down the crowded streets.

Surveillance cameras will also be installed on the street, with a $12.6 million command center to monitor the network of cameras.  Additional measures would include installing new lighting, and creating a more efficient way for law enforcement to respond more quickly in case of an emergency.

The city is also looking into stepping up enforcement on laws that prevent artists of performers from blocking sidewalks or business entrances, and prohibiting vendors from operating without permits.

While the plan is still in draft form, the officials believe the security plan as a whole could add up to about $30 million.
