5 Killed in Mexican Nightclub Shooting

In the early hours of Monday, January 16, gunfire erupted into a Mexican nightclub in Playa de Carmen, Mexico, leaving five people dead and more than a dozen more injured, officials said.

Witnesses from the event say the gunfire was steady for roughly 30 seconds as people ducked for cover or attempted to run from the Blue Parrot nightclub. Video posted to social media shows throngs of people panicked as they hit the street outside the nightclub. One person died in the stampede to safety.

Authorities were able to find a Taurus .38 caliber revolver inside the nightclub as well as 20 empty bullet shells.

Police have interrogated three people in connection to the incident, but there are no suspects at this time. They are investigating who might be involved in the shooting and what their motive was.

The shooting broke out at The BPM Festival which draws visitors from around the world to the resort beach city to enjoy electronic music. Among the dead was a US national, a Canadian, an Italian and two Mexican Nationals.

The BPM Festival put out a statement on their Facebook, saying they are working closely with law enforcement.
