Toronto Shooting Leaves Two Dead, Dozen Wounded

An active shooter situation in Toronto left two people dead and a dozen more wounded over the weekend.

Two people died a at least a dozen more were wounded after a gunman open fired in a popular neighborhood late Sunday night.

In addition to the two victims, police have reported that the gunman is also dead. It was not immediately clear if the assailant was killed in an exchange of gunfire with police or died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Toronto Police Chief Mark Saunders told reporters that police would be investigating all possible motives, including terrorism, as they set out to find the motive for the rampage.

The Canadian city has been grappling with gun violence. Earlier this month, a report said 2018 had seen 200 shootings thus far with 26 fatalities. In the same time frame of 2017, there had been 188 shootings and 17 deaths.

As a result of the uptick in gun violence, police have been deploying more officers to at-risk neighborhoods, doubling the amount of surveillance cameras and adding gunshot detection around the city
