Axis Cameras Help Protect Latin America’s Busiest Subway Station

Mexipuerto Ciudad Azteca subway station, designed to ease the traffic problem in Mexico City and outlying areas, transports more than 150,000 passengers a day. At rush hour, as many as 1,000 travelers per minute board the trains. Mexipuerto’s security committee wanted to install a surveillance system that could help the transportation hub ensure the safety of its users. The technology needed to integrate with the station’s TCP/IP network to provide optimum performance during service hours without sacrificing image quality.

DHS Hoping To Understand, Limit Impact Of Chemical, Biological Agent Release In Subway Systems

To limit the impact of similar attacks and determine the best actions to take during a chemical or biological agent release, scientists are investigating how these contaminants would travel through a subway system’s underground tunnel network.

Sydney Harbour Bridge

Bridging the Gap

In the days before fiber optics, certain surveillance applications simply weren't possible—or too expensive to even be considered feasible. In the past, that would have been the case at the West Gate Bridge in Melbourne, Australia, where a fiber-optic solution from Infinova is now linking cameras to the city's video depot, miles away. West Gate is Australia's third-longest bridge, stretching a total of 8,473 feet across the Yarra River. The beautiful cable-stayed bridge, which was built in the 1970s, is twice as long as the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

IP Video System Secures Malmo Train Line In Sweden

When construction is complete in December 2010, 10.5 miles of new high-tech, double-track electric rails will connect Malmo Central Station in Sweden with the Oresund Bridge to Denmark. Six kilometers of that will run underground in two parallel tunnels through the center of Malmo. The goal of the CityTunnel connection between Malmo and Copenhagen is to greatly reduce the travel time between the two cities -- and not least to transform Malmo Central Station into a transit hub that powers the pan-Scandinavian network.

  • The Evolution of IP Camera Intelligence

As the 30th anniversary of the IP camera approaches in 2026, it is worth reflecting on how far we have come. The first network camera, launched in 1996, delivered one frame every 17 seconds—not impressive by today’s standards, but groundbreaking at the time. It did something that no analog system could: transmit video over a standard IP network. Read Now

  • From Surveillance to Intelligence

Years ago, it would have been significantly more expensive to run an analytic like that — requiring a custom-built solution with burdensome infrastructure demands — but modern edge devices have made it accessible to everyone. It also saves time, which is a critical factor if a missing child is involved. Video compression technology has played a critical role as well. Over the years, significant advancements have been made in video coding standards — including H.263, MPEG formats, and H.264—alongside compression optimization technologies developed by IP video manufacturers to improve efficiency without sacrificing quality. The open-source AV1 codec developed by the Alliance for Open Media—a consortium including Google, Netflix, Microsoft, Amazon and others — is already the preferred decoder for cloud-based applications, and is quickly becoming the standard for video compression of all types.
