The State of Safe Web Browsing in Enterprises Today

Secure Access Service Edge (SASE) and Security Service Edge (SSE) are revolutionizing enterprise security and as businesses increasingly adopt remote work, they have become crucial for providing seamless, secure access to resources anywhere. A key requirement according to Gartner for a SASE/SSE solution is to provide secure web access to enterprise users by ensuring malware protection, threat prevention, URL filtering, content inspection of sensitive data, among others. The primary component in a SASE/SSE solution responsible for this are Secure Web Gateways (SWG). These are basically cloud based SSL-intercepting proxies which inspect traffic and promise to detect and mitigate web attacks and malicious file downloads, among many other threats.
In today’s world of complex web applications and protocols, do SWGs deliver on their promise to provide secure web access to enterprise users? What kind of attacks are SWGs great at detecting and mitigating and what do they fail at? Do endpoint security solutions solve the gaps in SWGs detection?
