It Could Never Happen Here: Lessons Learned from a School Shooting

Ronald Applin, Chief of Police for the Atlanta Public Schools Police Department, will present an after-action report of a school shooting that happened on February 14, 2024 at Benjamin E. Mays High School. Chief Applin will go over some of the events that took place before the incident and discuss the public safety response, subsequent investigation and return to school.

Chief Ronald Applin

Ronald was named the first Chief of Police for the new Atlanta Public Schools Police Department in 2016 and has over 34 years of law enforcement experience. He served in the United States Marine Corps Reserves for 6 years and simultaneously began his career with the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office in 1989 and retired in 2010 as a Captain.  Chief Applin earned a Bachelor of Science Social Science in Criminal Justice from Mercer University, a Master of Public Administration from Troy University, and has completed all coursework, except for dissertation, for a PhD in Criminal Justice from Capella University. He is also a graduate of the FBI National Academy 220th Session, a member of the 30th Georgia International Law Enforcement Exchange Delegation to Israel, 2023 and Graduate of the Leadership Atlanta 2024 Class.

Murray Kogod

General Counsel at Phillips Group, Inc. from 2015 to 2016. Murray Kogod served as a Captain and NCIS Team SAC/Commander at the Habersham County Sheriff's Office from 2013 to 2015. Before that, they worked as a Colonel/Chief Deputy at Stephens County Sheriff's Office from 2009 to 2013 and held the role of Major/Chief Deputy, Captain, Lieutenant at Barrow County Sheriff's Office from 2001 to 2008. Murray started their professional career at Hall County Sheriff's Office, where they served as Captain, Sergeant, and Deputy Sheriff from 1996 to 2000. Murray Kogod also worked as an Assistant District Attorney for Investigations at the Northeastern Judicial Circuit D.A.'s Office from 1994 to 1995.

Murray Kogod obtained a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in Government and Politics from the University of Maryland College Park between 1982 and 1986. Following this, they attended the Western New England College School of Law, where they earned a Juris Doctorate degree in Law from 1986 to 1989. In 2000, Murray Kogod also pursued studies at the F.B.I. National Academy, focusing on Law Enforcement Management. No end year is specified for this particular program.
