Tips: Summer Travel Safety

More than 2 million people will travel domestically this year, with the majority of leisure travel occurring in the summer months. When choosing the perfect all-inclusive package and planning family activities, it is important to incorporate the appropriate safety precautions. Whether traveling domestically or abroad, summer months evoke images of faraway destinations, beaches and relaxation. A safe trip will make certain that the vacation is enjoyable.

From securing your home to boarding the plane and checking-in to the hotel, there are a few simple actions every individual or family can take to secure their belongings and themselves. Universal Protection Service recommends the following tips as helpful reminders when planning a summer vacation.

  • Provide family/friends with your contact information, emergency plans and itinerary.
  • Create a wallet-sized card that includes the medical information of each traveler.
  • If traveling abroad, check with the Department of State for travel warnings.
  • Know how to contact the local U.S. Embassy or Consulate and keep this information in several different places.
  • If using a taxi, obtain a list of licensed companies from the airport and never get into an unmarked cab.
  • Stay with your luggage at all times and maintain a clear view of your belongings during the airport screening process, while on the plane and at the hotel check-in.
  • When making hotel reservations, request a room near the elevator, this area is typically the safest.
  • Identify the fire safety information and evacuation routes when arriving at the hotel room.
  • Before leaving your home, make sure it is secure and ask a neighbor to check your home every few days and collect your mail.
