Rio de Janeiro Taps Verint To Improve City-Wide Surveillance System

Verint Systems, a provider of analytic software-based solutions for workforce-enterprise optimization and security, recently announced that the city of Rio de Janeiro has expanded its deployment of the company’s Nextiva Critical Infrastructure solution to improve its city-wide surveillance system. The expanded deployment will help to further reduce crime rates and positively impact the city’s tourism industry and overall economic growth.

Rio de Janeiro is the second largest city in Brazil with a population of more tha 11 million. With proximity to miles of beaches and mountains, Rio de Janeiro is a top destination for world travelers, and tourism is extremely important to the local economy.

To combat escalating crime rates, the city initially deployed Verint’s Nextiva networked video solution in certain public spaces throughout the city. The success of the initial implementation, which contributed to the reduction of crime rates by more than 50 percent in the high-traffic area of Copacabana Beach, prompted the city to expand the deployment city-wide.

“We are committed to providing a safe city atmosphere for the residents and visitors of Rio de Janeiro, and through our expanded deployment of Verint’s Nextiva solution, we will continue to decrease crime rates to allow our economy to thrive,” said Edval de Oliveria Novaes, Under Secretary of Intelligence for the city of Rio de Janeiro. “We’ve already seen dramatic, positive results from the initial deployment, and this expansion will build on that success.”

The expanded deployment extends Rio’s city-wide surveillance system to new neighborhoods and connects this system to 26 military police battalion locations. Nextiva transmits video data over multiple license-free wireless bands, making video readily available on the city’s IP network. Nextiva enables police and other security personnel to centrally monitor video from cameras in city centers, open spaces, high traffic areas and other sensitive facilities to optimize law enforcement resources and enhance the safety of visitors and residents.

“We are extremely pleased to grow our relationship with a major global city like Rio de Janeiro,” said Jim Clark, senior vice president and general manager of Verint Video Intelligence Solutions. “Our Nextiva Critical Infrastructure solution is well-equipped to help secure complex and geographically diverse municipal environments, and provides the actionable intelligence that law enforcement personnel require for proactive threat prevention.”

  • Evolving Cybersecurity Strategies

Organizations are increasingly turning their attention to human-focused security approaches, as two out of three (68%) cybersecurity incidents involve people. Threat actors are shifting from targeting networks and systems to hacking humans via social engineering methods, living off human errors as their most prevalent attack vector. Whether manipulated or not, human cyber behavior is leveraged to gain backdoor access into systems. This mainly results from a lack of employee training and awareness about evolving attack techniques employed by malign actors. Read Now
