Oberthur Technologies To Provide Smart Cards For CLEAR Program

Oberthur Technologies has been selected to provide its ID-One PIV smart card to members of CLEAR, Alclear LLC's Trusted Traveler program.

CLEAR offers members speed and predictability through airport security by partnering with airports to provide a designated CLEARlane at security checkpoints. Members present their CLEARcards, manufactured by Oberthur Technologies, which feature encrypted biometrics including fingerprints and iris images. By matching their fingerprints or iris images to the information on the card, the CLEAR member's identity is verified.

Oberthur Technologies provided the cards for the original CLEAR program from 2005 until the program ended in 2009 and was selected again by Alclear earlier this year.

"We're pleased to have Oberthur Technologies as a partner in the new CLEAR program," said Caryn Seidman-Becker, CEO of Alclear. "The security of the card and its contents are critical to the success of CLEAR, we needed to ensure the product we provided our customers was proven and reliable."

Oberthur Technologies began production of the cards in October. The program first launched at the Orlando International Airport and is scheduled to launch this month at the Denver International Airport. Future plans for the card may include adding supplementary functionality, such as a payment application for users.

"Oberthur Technologies' leadership in the smart card industry and our experience offering secure document personalization and delivery created the perfect fit to meet Alclear's needs," said Patrick W. Hearn, Oberthur Technologies' vice president of government ID markets -- Americas, "by offering the latest, most comprehensive platform technology, which utilizes current Federal standards for Personal Identity Verification (PIV), we can provide a secure solution that will work and grow with the program."

All manufacturing for the CLEAR cards will take place at Oberthur Technologies' secured Exton, PA-based ISO 9001 and 14001[1] facility with personalization primarily taking place in its Chantilly, Va.-certified facility.
