Gabrielle Giffords Gives Thumbs Up from Hospital Bed

Rep. Gabrielle Giffords of Arizona is now listed in critical but stable condition. For most of the time, she is kept in a medically induced coma to minimize discomfort. Doctors say she is "functioning at a high level." She even gave her doctors a thumbs up from her hospital bed.

"When she did that, we were having a party in there," said Dr. Peter Rhee at the Arizona Medical Center.

Seven other patients remain hospitalized. Five are listed in serious condition and two in good condition.

The alleged shooter, Jared Lee Loughner, 22, made a brief appearance in a Phoenix courtroom to formally hear the charges against him. A preliminary hearing was set for January 24.

Loughner faces include two counts of murder, two counts of attempted murder and one count of attempting to kill a member of Congress. State prosecutors could also bring charges in the remaining cases.
