Smiths Detection Joins New Coalition of Security Manufacturing Companies

Smiths Detection has joined with a new coalition of security manufacturing companies. The Security Manufacturers Coalition, organized under the Airport Consultants Council (ACC), will focus on aviation and intermodal security issues, advocate for adequate government funding and transparency for security technology, and draw attention to the adoption of international standards and regulations.

“We are excited to join with other members of the coalition in support of our customer’s mission to keep people safe and secure, whether traveling, serving their countries or living their everyday lives. Joining with other manufacturing members will also help in the advocacy for international technology standards for aviation security,” said Tim Picciotti, vice president, global programs and U.S. country head for Smiths Detection.

Members of the coalition provide security screening equipment to a large number of public and private organizations.

Additional issues the coalition will address include partnering with government to create strategic plans for the deployment of screening technologies; partnering with government to define requirements to better drive research and development investments; and advocating for efficient and equitable acquisition processes.

Smiths Detection designs and makes products to detect and identify threats including explosives, chemical agents, biohazards, nuclear, radiation, narcotics, weapons and contraband. The company has plants in eight U.S. states. It partners federal and state government agencies and first responders to strengthen homeland security and safeguard the military. Major customers include the Department of Defense and Department of Homeland Security. It is part of Smiths Group, which employs around 23,000 people, including more than 9,000 in the U.S. where it operates around 100 sites in 40 states.
