Alerted just before 1:30 am, police arrived at the Lincoln Memorial to find green paint splattered across the leg and base of the 19-foot statue in Washington.
According to police, no words or symbols were painted or written on the memorial, and no other damage was found. However, early morning joggers, who usually run up and down the memorial’s stairs, were met with bright yellow police tape.
“To me it’s defacing America. It’s not just defacing the Lincoln Memorial, but it’s something against all of America,” said early morning jogger Scott Arndt, who I agree with 100 percent, might I add.
Surveillance cameras are found in each corner of the monument, and the U.S. Park Police are actively reviewing the footage. Other officers are snapping pictures of the vandalism while police dogs are sniffing around, trying to detect the scent of the wrong-doer(s).
A special historic preservation team, complete with power washers, has also started cleaning up the mess.
