US Heightens Security at Federal Buildings Nationwide

US Heightens Security at Federal Buildings NationwideIn response to the recent fatal shooting at the Canadian Parliament building, the United States is stepping up their security at federal buildings in Washington, D.C., as well as on a nationwide scale. The Department of Homeland Security decided this was necessary due to enhanced risks of “small-scale attacks by a lone offender.”

Secretary Jeh Johnson did not discuss in detail the form of increased security, but he did emphasize it would vary and shift depending on the location. These new security measures have no expiration date and will probably last beyond elections. Also, the Federal Protective Service will be making officers more visible at key facilities throughout the nation.

In the meantime, law enforcement officials have expressed concern that the extremist group Islamic State could inspire solo terrorist attacks in the United States; therefore, while security measures are increasing, state and local governments are urged to be vigilant in guarding against potential small-scale attacks by a lone offender/”lone wolf” or a small group.

“Given world events, prudence dictates a heightened vigilance,” said Johnson.
