Honeywell's Lyric Makes CES Debut

Honeywell Security joined hundreds of other exhibitors at this year's Consumer Electronics Show (CES), and is showcasing it latest edition of home security with Lyric. The product is a new way for a family to stay in control of home comfort and security whether they are at home, or away. Honeywell's Lyric Makes CES Debut

Lyric is a professional-grade home security system that integrates with a home security portfolio of home automation products including awareness cameras, motion, smoke and intruder detectors, as well as thermostats, lighting, shade and lock controls. For example, a homeowner can disarm the system by addressing Lyric, simply saying, "Hello Lyric, I'm home." This command will automatically switch on the lights and adjust the temperature settings in the home. Lyric joins the company's thermostat, which was introduced in 2014.

"In an increasingly connected world, consumers are looking for ways to simplify their lives," said Jeremy Eaton, president of Honeywell Connected Home. "The Lyric family of products provides the comfort, protection and security that homeowners want for their most valuable assets, and seamlessly connects with and automates other home systems to simplify their lives."

Lyric brings multiple scenarios to the consumers' life by adjusting the temperature automatically whether the homeowner is driving away from or returning home, keeping an eye on events outside the home or around the house, using a few quick commands to lock up and turn off lights around the house and quickly connecting with professionals for assistance.

  • From Surveillance to Intelligence

Years ago, it would have been significantly more expensive to run an analytic like that — requiring a custom-built solution with burdensome infrastructure demands — but modern edge devices have made it accessible to everyone. It also saves time, which is a critical factor if a missing child is involved. Video compression technology has played a critical role as well. Over the years, significant advancements have been made in video coding standards — including H.263, MPEG formats, and H.264—alongside compression optimization technologies developed by IP video manufacturers to improve efficiency without sacrificing quality. The open-source AV1 codec developed by the Alliance for Open Media—a consortium including Google, Netflix, Microsoft, Amazon and others — is already the preferred decoder for cloud-based applications, and is quickly becoming the standard for video compression of all types.
