Dallas Police Plead for Additional Security after Driveby Shooting at Substation

The City of Dallas is feeling the pressure to increase security around police stations after a driveby shooting narrowly missed a police officer and left a substation riddled with bullet holes.

Dallas officers have been asking for ways to reinforce stations with measures such as fences and bulletproof glass since two years ago when a gunman entered into a standoff with police at the department’s headquarters.

In a press conference following the shooting, Assistant Chief Randy Blankenbaker said the department will revisit improvements for station and officer security.

Michael Mata, President of the Dallas Police Association, said that it “takes too many people to put a signature on a piece of paper,” when explaining what is holding up longtime plans for physical improvements around the stations.

Mata hopes that this newest incident will be a wakeup call for the city. He also hopes it will bring awareness of the department’s shortcomings to the public and that they may be inclined to donate or “press upon city leaders… to do what they were elected to do.”
