UK Police Foil Two Alleged Terror Plots in 24 Hours

Police in London say they’ve foiled two terror incidents before anyone was injured or killed just weeks after a suspect drove a car into several people on Westminster Bridge and tried to gain entrance into Parliament.

First Foiled Plot

Yesterday, police were able to stop a second attack on Parliament when they arrested a suspicious man near the area. Witnesses say the man was pinned to the ground on Parliament Street, within sight of the Houses of Parliament and an array of British government buildings.

Forensics officers examined the scene outside the London Underground station at Westminster and recovered the suspects backpack and at least two knives were found inside.

The suspect was arrested on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon and on suspicious of the commission, preparation and instigation of acts of terrorism, according to police.

Second Foiled Plot

Police say they foiled a second active terror plot within 24 hours of the thwarted attack on Parliament.

Police were carrying on raids in a counter-terrorism mission when officers entered a house in Willesden, in the city’s north-west and shot a woman in her 20s after she was perceived to be a threat. Six other suspects have been arrested in connection with the raid.

Police believe they broke apart a group plotting a future attack.

Police said that intensive work was underway to contain the terror threat in the UK.

"I wanted to reassure the public that our increased activity to combat terrorism over the last two years continues -- both by police and security services.” Deputy Assistant Commissioner Neil Basu said. “Activity continues around the clock to identify and stop these threats and we are making arrests on a near daily basis."
