Blast at Bangkok Hospitals Injures 24

An explosion happened in a waiting room inside a military hospital in the Thai capital.

More than 20 people have been injured in a small bomb blast at a military hospital in Bangkok.

The explosion happened at Phramongkutklao Hospital, which is used to serve current and retired members of the military and their families.

Police said it was unclear who was behind the explosion, which is thought to be the result of a pipe bomb hiding in a vase in a waiting room area near a pharmacy.

“We found pieces of a circuit and a battery, as well as some wires,” the Bangkok Post quoted Deputy National Police Chief General Srivara Rangibrahmanakul as saying. “We’ll investigate further by initially we found the explosive to have a range of two to three meters.”

Officials said more people had minor wounds as the result of flying glass. Eight people were admitted to the hospital. Sixteen others were injured, but able to walk away from the incident.

The explosion comes on the third anniversary of the 2014 coup that brought the military government to power. Many believe it is because of this that police have reason to suspect those who oppose the junta.
