LA Metro to Test New Security Screening Systems Designed to Detect Threats in Seconds

Metro has teamed up with TSA and Evolv Technology to test a new weapon screening system.

The Los Angeles Metropolitan Transportation Authority, also known as Metro, has teamed up with TSA and Evolv Technology to test a new weapon screening system.

The new portable screening system can scan 600 people per hour, each scan just taking a fraction of a second to detect a variety of mass casualty threats.

"We want to always be looking at the horizons for the newest technologies that are going to help improve safety on the Metro system, so this is the type of technology that we're looking at now," Metro Spokesperson Dave Sotero said in a statement to a local news station.

The system can scan in real time and will alert officials if any threats are on board, such threats include firearms and explosives, before an potential harm can be done.

The proposed system does not store raw data and its application is flexible and portable since it is on wheels. Sotero said the portability of the system is convenient because it allows for random screenings when needed.

The system is set to be tested before installation.

"We are looking into how effectively people can get through this system and still catch their trains," Sotero said.
