Five people were shot Thursday night at a residence in Syracuse, New York, authorities said. As of late Thursday, authorities hadn’t identified a suspect nor a motive, according to Police Chief Frank Fowler.

According to police, officers received calls about a shooting at a residence in Syracuse at about 9:02 p.m. Thursday. Police arrived to find a crowd of people, with several injured from apparent gunshot wounds. The shooting took place at a memorial service for a man who died of cancer, according to neighbors.

Officers requested additional ambulances and officers. The victims, ages eight to 35, were transported to Upstate University Hospital and in stable condition, Fowler said. He said it wasn’t clear if they were shot inside or outside of the home.

"This is a very tragic event," Fowler said. "This is something that cannot occur in our community. I can tell you right now there are folks out there who have information about what happened here tonight and there are a lot of people that are standing around me that are completely outraged and heartbroken tonight and this type of investigation deserves closure."

Fowler said there is no suspect information at present.
