Two people were shot and killed at a Kroger grocery store in Jeffersontown, Kentucky, on Wednesday. According to police, the suspect fatally shot the two victims before exchanging fire with an armed bystander and fleeing the scene. The suspect is now in custody.

Both victims died at the Kroger, Jeffersontown Police Chief Sam Rogers said. He said there was no known motive and the victims appeared to be shot at random.

Police received a call reporting the shooting at about 3 p.m. Wednesday, Rogers said. The suspect fired multiple rounds at the male victim inside of the Kroger and shot the female victim multiple times in the parking lot. An armed bystander engaged the shooter in the parking lot, and neither were struck. The suspect fled before he was taken into custody nearby, Rogers said.

"We are shocked and saddened by the shooting incident that occurred around 2:30 p.m. today," The Kroger Co. said. "Thanks to the quick response of the local police department, the suspect was apprehended and our store is now secure."

The store will remain closed until the investigation is complete. Federal law enforcement is working with local law enforcement to investigate.
