California City Adds Surveillance Cameras to Park

The cameras are expected to cost about $30,000 and will be installed in about three months.

The city of San Luis Obispo has voted to install surveillance cameras in city parks in response to several incidents. The city already has ten surveillance cameras scattered throughout the city, but four new cameras will be installed specifically in Meadow Park, Mitchell Park and Mission Plaza.

The surveillance cameras have been in use in the city for about five years. Police say with several angles on one cameras, they've been a big help. For example, a camera overlooking a street was able to capture an assault with a knife and based on the video, police were able to identify the suspect in the case, according to San Luis Obispo Police Department Lt. Brian Amoroso.

The existing and new cameras will be capturing footage 24 hours a day and according to Lt. Amoroso, "If there is an incident that's captured that we need, we'll download that video and it'll be booked as evidence."

The cameras also serve as a way to deter crime, as a bad actor may decide to turn away from possible crime knowing it will be caught on video.

The cameras are expected to cost about $30,000 and will be installed in about three months.
