A U.S. Marine was shot and killed while on duty at Marine Barracks Washington, D.C., early Tuesday morning, according to a U.S. Marine Corps press release.

The shooting occurred inside the Marine compound, and there was no threat posed to the public, Marine Gunnery Sgt. John Jackson said. Metropolitan Police Department authorities responded to the incident scene.

A police report said officers arrived at the scene of the shooting to find one person who had been “handling a firearm” and another person who had been shot. The victim was taken to a hospital but did not survive, according to the report.

On Wednesday, authorities said the shooting is being investigated as accidental, according to USA Today.

The Marine’s name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin, the Marine Corp said.

“The command’s priorities are to take care of the Marine’s family and friends,” said Col. Don Tomich, the barracks’ commanding officer. “We want to ensure these personnel are being provided for during this challenging time.”
