Cedar Falls Increasing Safety Measures in Nightlife Area Following Recent Shooting

Cedar Falls, Iowa, plans to increase security in a popular nightlife area after a recent shooting.

The shooting took place on Jan. 1. Two teenagers were injured when a suspect shot at them near the intersection of College Street and 22nd Street. According to KWWL, the suspect has not yet been arrested.

Police said that College Street, commonly known as “The Hill,” is still a safe and important area for the community, but a conversation about safety is necessary.

The Cedar Falls mayor, councilmen and police met Wednesday with business owners in the area to discuss safety and security improvements to be made on The Hill.

Cedar Falls Police said the plans include the installation of about 10 new surveillance cameras to College Street and to nearby parking lots and roads. They would also like to add some additional street lights and to brighten the street lights that are already in the area.

Police will meet Tuesday to figure out next steps, including how much the improvements will cost and when they will meet with the City Council to present these plans.
