Alabama Councilman Calls for Increased Security at Park Following Shooting

Mobile, Ala., Councilman Fred Richardson calls for increased security at Sage Park following a shooting Friday night.

Mobile, Ala. Councilman Fred Richardson is calling for increased security at Sage Park following a shooting Friday night. Richardson wants to install security cameras and increase police presence at the park.

Mobile Police said several shots were fired from men in their cars just before 6:30 p.m. Friday. No one was hurt and an investigation is actively ongoing, though no shooter has been identified yet.

Richardson said he has received multiple calls from concerned citizens wondering about safety at the park. He said he wants to increase security as soon as possible.

"Almost every weekend we have some type of violence in the city. It's something we have to continue to work with," he said.

Richardson wants there to be a police presence at all scheduled basketball games and to install security cameras on the court to monitor events 24/7.

"My goal is to have the cameras out here as soon as possible," Richardson said.

Richardson will be meeting with Mayor Sandy Stimpson about implementing security cameras and extra police as soon as possible.

“[…] We can't let the kids come back out here in fear, because they are not coming back unless they believe they are safe. But, if we can say that there will be a police presence, to keep doing what they are doing they will, if not they will go somewhere else," Richardson said.
