Pretty Close to Perfection

Pretty Close to Perfection

You may disagree, that is your privilege, but I am thinking that last week’s ISC West 2021 tradeshow was almost perfect. Sure, lots of the bigger booths, and industry names were not at ISC West, but that did not stop those who did find a space from showing their wares.

Yes, there were a couple of hiccups, and I will start with the hard concrete floor. I guess most of us had gotten used to the softer touch of carpeting. Oh, and the temperature station before going into the show was needed but did it really work? I never saw anyone turned away.

There were numerous points on the upside, beginning with wider aisles to travel from one side of the hall to the other. Of course, there were fewer people attending so that helped expedite foot traffic. It was terrific to see old friends, and make new friends along the way.

It was a smaller tradeshow, and reminded me somewhat of the first shows I attended two decades ago. I have watched this event grow over the years, and I applaud those in charge of getting vendors and attendees. They have done magnificent work. Following more than a year of COVID-19 sheltering, this gathering of security experts, integrators and end users were treated to a near perfect show.

I am hoping by early spring, COVID-19 will be thing of the past. If you haven’t gotten you vaccination, please do so you can sign up for ISC West 2022.

As the 30th anniversary of the IP camera approaches in 2026, it is worth reflecting on how far we have come. The first network camera, launched in 1996, delivered one frame every 17 seconds—not impressive by today’s standards, but groundbreaking at the time. It did something that no analog system could: transmit video over a standard IP network. Read Now

  • From Surveillance to Intelligence

Years ago, it would have been significantly more expensive to run an analytic like that — requiring a custom-built solution with burdensome infrastructure demands — but modern edge devices have made it accessible to everyone. It also saves time, which is a critical factor if a missing child is involved. Video compression technology has played a critical role as well. Over the years, significant advancements have been made in video coding standards — including H.263, MPEG formats, and H.264—alongside compression optimization technologies developed by IP video manufacturers to improve efficiency without sacrificing quality. The open-source AV1 codec developed by the Alliance for Open Media—a consortium including Google, Netflix, Microsoft, Amazon and others — is already the preferred decoder for cloud-based applications, and is quickly becoming the standard for video compression of all types.
