Surveillance Industry’s 30-Day Problem

Intelligent Video Lifecycle Management solves primary disk capacity limits by archiving long-term footage to tape for future AI analysis.

For more than thirty years, the surveillance industry has continuously seen the world while simultaneously deleting the overwhelming majority of what it saw.

That contradiction defines one of physical security’s most persistent architectural problems. Organizations invest heavily in cameras, VMS, networks and storage infrastructure to record facilities, people, assets and operations around the clock. Yet most of that visual history is kept for only a few weeks before it is automatically overwritten.

The footage is not deleted because it has no potential value. It is removed because conventional surveillance systems were designed around the capacity limits of primary disk storage. As camera counts, resolution, frame rates, and retention requirements increase, organizations are forced to choose between buying more expensive storage and shortening the period during which recorded evidence remains available.

This choice creates risk. Claims for injuries, internal theft, workplace incidents, investigations, and other events are often discovered after the usual 14- or 30-day retention period has ended. By the time someone needs to find specific video, it might already be gone.

The industry needs to stop thinking of video retention as just a storage capacity issue. What is missing is a proper system to manage the entire life of recorded video. Intelligent Video Lifecycle Management, or IVLM, adds this layer between the video management system and the storage.

The VMS still handles cameras, alarms, live viewing and investigations. IVLM manages how long video is kept, where it is stored, when it moves to different storage types, and how to find it later. This setup allows recent video to stay on fast disks while older video moves to cheaper, long-term storage like proven LTO tape technology – the Hollywood gold standard for video preservation.

Users should not need to know where the video is physically found. The system should show one continuous timeline and fetch the video in the background. Getting videos from deep storage might not be instant. An automated LTO tape system could take a couple of minutes to find a cartridge, load it, find the right spot and restore the video.

A well-designed system should clearly explain this, keep thumbnails and index information, and let users keep working while the video is prepared for playback. Metadata is just as important. Storage keeps the video, but metadata keeps its meaning. Camera ID, location, timestamps, events, retention rules, audit trails, and evidence details need to stay linked to the footage, no matter where the files are stored. Keeping video long-term also changes how artificial intelligence will be used in the future.

Most current video analytics focus on immediate detection, like reading a license plate or sending an alert. Future analytics might recognize behaviors, risks and operational patterns that today's systems cannot detect. Existing metadata might not be enough.

New AI models might need to re-process the original recorded video. If that video was deleted after 30 days, that chance is lost forever. Keeping years of original video allows companies to use future analytics on past events, find unusual patterns, study changes in operations, and gain insights that couldn't have been foreseen when the video was first recorded.

The next generation of surveillance systems should therefore focus on more than just recording events. They must preserve continuity.
