First: "Do No Harm." Are Active Shooter Drills Missing the Point?

Mass shootings in the United States are an unwelcome part of our lives. Although the causes of mass shootings are complex and are not the point of this presentation, nonetheless the public is seeking a response from government and school institutions to these rare but horrific events.

This presentation aims to address what we know about current nationwide trends in mass shooting preparedness for school children. The presentation will provide information on relevant research on the use of emergency drills globally and then specifically around mass shooting events. The presentation will discuss what are the considered best practices for school preparedness and contrast that to information about how many schools are preparing. Is the preparation being done causing more harm than good?

Objectives:

  1. What are the various types of “active shooter drills?”
  2. What is the evidence that they are effective?
  3. What is the developmental perspective for preparedness drills in school education (pre-k, elementary, middle and high school)?
  4. What is the base rate of mental health disorders in primary school age children?
  5. What should schools do to prepare?
