Crowd Science & Public Safety
How can understanding crowd behaviors, movements, and science enhance venue safety and security?
Security professionals often fall into the trap of “that’s not my job” or “we’re not trained to do that” when it comes to mass gathering crowd movements such as, ingress, egress, and in-event movements as they pertain guest amenities (restrooms, concessions, etc.). Recent events such as, the Travis Scott Juice WRLD crowd surge in Texas and the bombing at the conclusion of the Ariana Grande concert in Manchester in 2017 demonstrate how better understanding crowd movements can influence safety and security planning and response.
Commonly used security practices like behavior assessment, crowd management, and appropriate staffing ratios can help venue safety and security managers provide safer environments for their fans and staff. In this presentation, I will demonstrate how to use these tactics when planning your next event.

Director of Security
John Joines is a dedicated safety and security professional with more than 22 years of experience in large venue security services. Beginning his career as an hourly security officer for the Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, CA, the job was simply a placeholder while finishing his degree in music education. After starting this role, John quickly realized a passion for keeping people safe while using a guest-service approach. Shortly thereafter, the 9/11 attacks occurred and, under unfortunate circumstances, opened a number of opportunities in the security industry which made a career in the field a reality. John worked for the Disneyland Resort in nearly all facets of security operations over the next 17 years, eventually leaving as one of the senior Security Managers for the Westside Security Operations team overseeing guest screening and parking lot and hotel operations. A desire to further his career and leave California prompted the move to Boston in 2017 to become the Director of Public Safety for the Massachusetts Convention Center Authority. There, John oversaw two convention facilities in the city and a major public parking garage in the Boston Common. During his tenure, john helped standardize guest screening in the convention space and was instrumental in achieving DHS SAFETY Act designation for the Authority’s public safety program. An avid hockey fan and always looking to bolster his large venue security portfolio, when the Director of Security role at TD Garden opened in late 2019, John jumped at the chance to work his “dream job” and work for the Boston Bruins and TD Garden. There, John has been instrumental in safely returning fans to the venue amongst the COVID-19 pandemic and is currently building a first-class security program at the arena.
