As reports, communications and digital activity continue to grow, threat assessment professionals face the challenge of identifying meaningful patterns before concerning behavior escalates.

This webinar will examine how artificial intelligence (AI) can support threat assessment professionals in the proactive identification of emerging risk. Building on applications highlighted in the provided presentation, including automated triage, natural language processing, social media monitoring, detection of digital deviations, structured rubric application and broad case analysis, the session will shift the focus from responding to known threats toward threat hunting and earlier recognition of behavioral escalation.

Participants will explore how AI can assist in identifying weak signals across large volumes of information, including patterns of grievance, fixation, leakage, threatening communication, unusual access behavior and changes in digital activity. Applied examples will demonstrate how AI may help analysts prioritize cases, organize fragmented information, generate investigative questions and identify areas requiring deeper human inquiry. The program will also address false positives, contextual error, privacy, bias, transparency and the danger of automating professional judgment, emphasizing AI as a decision-support and investigative augmentation tool rather than a replacement for multidisciplinary threat assessment expertise.

By the end of this program, participants will be able to:

Identify potential applications of AI in threat hunting, including the detection of behavioral patterns, weak signals, digital deviations and other indicators of emerging risk.
Apply AI-assisted methods to organize and analyze threat-relevant information, prioritize cases for further review and generate targeted investigative questions that support early identification and intervention.
Evaluate the benefits, limitations and ethical considerations associated with AI-supported threat assessment, including concerns related to false positives, bias, privacy, transparency and the continued need for human professional judgment.

About the Speaker:

Brian Van Brunt, Director of Behavior and Threat Management for D-Prep Safety

Brian Van Brunt, EdD, is the Director of Behavior and Threat Management for D-Prep Safety. He currently serves as the Title VI coordinator in the Office for Institutional Equity at Vassar College and recently completed a year as the interim Director of Clinical Counseling at Salisbury University. Author of over 20 books, Brian has spent time as a child and family therapist, university professor, assistant deputy director of training at Secure Community Network, partner at TNG and president of the National Association for Behavioral Intervention and Threat Assessment (NABITA). He is an internationally recognized expert in behavioral intervention, threat assessment, crisis preparedness, mental illness and instructional design. Brian has provided consulting services to schools, colleges and universities across the country and abroad on a wide variety of topics related to student mental health, counseling, campus violence and behavioral intervention.
