GovSec Program To Focus On Military’s Expanding Role In Domestic Defense

A new symposium at GovSec and U.S. Law, “DOMESTIC DEFENSE 2009: The Expanding Role of U.S. Military Forces in Defending America,” will take place on Wednesday, March 11. DOMESTIC DEFENSE 2009 will provide insight into the changing role of military forces resulting from the Pentagon’s approval to establish a 20,000 rapid reaction force to support activities in the aftermath of a chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear or high-yield explosive attack on American soil.

Assigned to the U.S. Northern Command (USNORTHCOM), deployment of these forces marks a significant shift in the domestic role of the U.S. military with legal, emergency response, communications, hardware, and law enforcement implications at the federal, state, and local levels of government.

“Following the terrorist attacks of 9/11 and the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, the U.S. military has become an increasingly important partner in domestic defense,” said Don Berey, show director for GovSec and U.S. Law. “This program will educate the military, emergency response, and law enforcement communities about the expanding role the military plays in defending our country domestically. We are excited to have Lt. Gen. Steven Blum from USNORTHCOM kick-off the program as the keynote.”
